Simplyhealth is a healthcare provider that started helping people to access medical care 140 years ago. It provides affordable healthcare and currently has over 1.3 million customers, helping 2.5 million people and 11,000 businesses.
Their executives recognised the opportunity afforded by the redevelopment of a former NatWest Bank, Redland House, which was a derelict, partially vandalised 1970’s concrete office block.

The site is located within a Conservation Area, and the existing building detracted from the character and appearance of its location by virtue of its square, block form, and generally unattractive design, its lack of respect for its context and surroundings, which was further exacerbated due to dereliction and the fact that the site is at one of the highest points of the Conservation Area and is prominent in distant views. There were a number of challenging design constraints, including neighbouring properties, Tree Preservation Orders, site topography, access and egress and rights of light.
This exemplar new office for Simplyhealth was built to replace the company’s former leased premises, James Tudor House on Victoria Street Bristol which was occupied by the company for 17 years. It was important to Simplyhealth to follow its mutual values and act responsibly towards the local community. The focus for the company was to create a high quality working environment of which employees would be truly proud and couple this with an innovative use of design and technology to improve productivity of the teams working in the office.
